New Musical Once Will Get Spring 2012 Opening on Broadway

Once, a musical adaptation of the 2007 Irish film featuring the Oscar-winning song “Falling Slowly,” is headed to Broadway. The show, which opened off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on December 6, will transfer to the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on February 28, with opening night set for March 18, directed by John Tiffany.

Steve Kazee (110 in the Shade, Spamalot) stars as Guy opposite Cristin Milioti (The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, Stunning) as Girl, the roles created on film by show composers Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. Also in the company are David Abeles, Claire Candela, Will Connolly, Elizabeth Davis, David Patrick Kelly, Anne L. Nathan, Lucas Papaelias, Andy Taylor, Erikka Walsh, Paul Whitty and J. Michael Zygo.

Once is set in Dublin, where an Irish musician (Guy) and a Czech immigrant (Girl) are drawn together by their shared love of music. Over the course of one fateful week, an unexpected friendship and collaboration quickly evolves into a powerful but complicated love story, underscored by emotionally charged music.

The musical adaptation features a book by Irish playwright Enda Walsh, movement by Steven Hoggett (director Tiffany’s collaborator on Black Watch), set and costume design by five-time Tony winner Bob Crowley, music direction by Martin Lowe, lighting design by Natasha Katz and sound design by Clive Goodwin.

The Broadway transfer of Once will be produced by Barbara Broccoli, John N. Hart Jr., Patrick Milling Smith, Frederick Zollo, Brian Carmody, Michael G. Wilson and Executive Producer Robert Cole. The show is running through January 15, 2012, at New York Theatre Workshop.
